This week we finalize working on Project 6: Organizing the Random and exploring different creative processes while conveying content through form and start to work on Project 7: Value Self-Portrait to explore how to abstract from Subject Matter by focusing on the Element of Design Value to visually understand Illusion of Space and depth through value gradation.

Due for This Class

Finalized Project 5 | Texture. Bring artwork to class, upload a photo of the project to your Wordpress portfolio along with the written critique under Project 5. Due at the beginning of Class 9.

Project 6 | Organizing the Random: Steps 5 & 6 completed.

Step 5: In your sketchbook create four (4) different 3" x 4" thumbnail sketches experimenting with your unconventional material. How can you use it to create line, value, shape, and/or texture?

Step 6: In your sketchbook using your PITT pens and your unconventional material, now create at least four (4) 3" x 4" thumbnail sketches that incorporate each of the random elements that you chose. The design may include other elements as well. Remember that your goal is create a visually interesting design with the following criteria:

a unified and dynamic composition
a focal point
variation of line
broad value scale (refer to the value scales you created)
figure/ground relationships
sense of space
the entire picture plane should be activated

Other design tools to consider utilizing:
directional dominance
texture (visual &/or actual)
repetition
the grid
perspective

On your sketchbook or notebook handwrite the definitions for the following words:
Value Range, Tint, Shade, Value Contrast, Achromatic Gray, Chiaroscuro, Value Pattern, Shading, High Key, Low Key.
You can find some of the definitions under the link Resources/Vocabulary Words, in "Design Basics", or researching the web. Due at the beginning of Class 9.

Reminder: Your midterm grades are available in Blackboard under Points Earned | My Grades. Students who are failing the class can withdraw from the course until November 5 without having their GPA affected. Please note that if you are a FAFSA recipient you may have to pay back part of your tuition when you withdraw from classes. Do consider your choices wisely.
